The Life and Miracles of St. Joseph

at the Mission San Jose Museum

Mission LogoAs we journey through the pages of history in the Mission San José Museum, a quiet hero emerges, inviting us to reflect on our own path. Saint Joseph, a man of unwavering faith, steadfast love, and courageous protection, whispers to us, sharing his story.

Who is Saint Joseph? The Bible reveals glimpses of his life, portraying a holy man, a faithful husband, and a fearless guardian of salvation. His selflessness and righteousness shine brightly, inspiring us to follow in his footsteps.

Saint Joseph is a good man. When he discovered Mary’s pregnancy, he chose compassion over concern for himself. He wanted to quietly withdraw from the proposed marriage with Mary. However, in his vision, he was told that the child was conceived by the power of God and he would name him “Jesus.” With humility, Saint Joseph embraced his new role, as the angel urged him to “take Mary home” (Matthew 1:20). This act of trust and obedience sets the stage for his remarkable journey.

Now, as a faithful and compassionate husband, Saint Joseph walked alongside Mary through life’s joys and hardships. Together, they visited Elizabeth (Luke 1:39-56). They traveled to Bethlehem and gave birth to Jesus in a manger (Luke 2:4-7). Saint Joseph guarded Mary and Jesus in the manger. When in his dream he was informed of Herod’s wrath and deadly intention, he decisively rooms Mary and Jesus, fleeing to Egypt (Matthew 2:13-15). There, he protected and raised his family, until he was told again to bring his family back to their homeland. Here, their family became a sanctuary of love and devotion for Jesus to grow in knowledge and obedience. Saint Joseph, while is seen as husband and protector, he also served as a “father” to Jesus from whom He learned the art of being a man with virtues and wisdom. Together with Blessed Mary, Saint Joseph provided the first domestic church for the Lord.

As we reflect on Saint Joseph’s life, we’re reminded that faithfulness is measured by our love and devotion to God. Fidelity to God unlocks for those who believe strength and courage to stand up and live out a holy life. As God intended from the beginning, family is a sanctuary of devotion, love and life. At the end, the Lord has made known that he wants to save humanity through and with the human family.

As you journey to the Diocesan Shrine of St. Joseph, Mission San José Parish, take a moment to encounter this extraordinary saint. Witness also the miracles he
had worked throughout history such as Saint Joseph’s Staircase (Loretto Chapel, New Mexico, 1878):
A mysterious staircase, built without visible support, attributed to his intervention. In addition, you are invited to revisit approved apparitions, and let their messages resonate in your prayers and meditations:

  1. Our Lady of America (1950s, Ohio): Saint Joseph appeared alongside Mary, emphasizing family unity and prayer.
  2. Knock Apparition (1879, Ireland): Saint Joseph stood alongside Mary and Saint John, reinforcing devotion to the Holy Family.
  3. Fatima Apparitions (1917, Portugal): Saint Joseph appeared alongside Mary, emphasizing prayer and reparation.

May Saint Joseph’s story and miracles inspire you to emulate his faith and love, deepen your devotion to God, and build strong, loving relationships with the holy family and those you love.

As you reflect on Saint Joseph’s life and miracles, may his example guide you on your own pilgrimage in life.
