ANNIVERSARY SPEAKER SERIES

What better way to appreciate the treasure in our own backyard, than to learn about some of the fascinating aspects of Mission San Jose’s history: the native peoples, the prosperous land, the musical prominence, the most authentic reconstruction of the 21 California Missions, and more.

Our 225th Anniversary Speaker Series consists of half-day programs that include a boxed breakfast provided by Mission Coffee, a lecture in the beautiful Mission Church, and a docent-led tour of Mission San Jose.

Explore the town of Mission San Jose, as well as the greater Mission area, through pictures and stories. This talk will focus on 1850 to present day. Learn and explore what was here ¨then¨ and what remains to this day.

The Life of St. Joseph reveals a healing path of trustful surrender to the will of God. Many of us are troubled by the twists and turns that our lives have taken.

Come reflect on how Saint Joseph’s surrender to the Providence of God provided for his Beloved Spouse, Mary, and her child, the Incarnate Son of God. Receive healing by being “reconciled to the flesh of your own history” (Pope Francis, Patris Corde).

MISSION SAN JOSÉ’S MUSICAL MEMORIES

Guest Speaker: Dr. Harmony Murphy

Explore the ancient music from Mission San José and all of the California Missions. This session will explain, show, and share the world of music that the musical Padre, Fr. Durán, and all of the talented musicians working at Mission San José created during the mission period. Come learn about the large choir and orchestra that earned Mission San José great notoriety as well as the contention it created.

MISSION SAN JOSE’S MOMENTOUS RESTORATION – THE WORKS AND DEVOTION OF A CALIFORNIA MISSIONS MASTER CRAFTSMAN

Widely regarded as Sir Richard Joseph Menn’s crowning achievement, this paper outlines the design criteria for Mission San Jose’s 1985 restoration and how careful consideration of historical facts and meticulous craftsmanship led to the beautiful Mission San Jose Church we enjoy today.

This talk examines José Jesús Vallejo, first civil administrator of Mission San Jose, an older brother and a son. One who is sometimes overshadowed by his younger brother, compared to his father, and even sometimes misquoted and misidentified by his daughter. But José Jesús has made his mark in the annals of history and with distinction.
