In March 1770, there was a shortage of food that almost canceled the establishment of the first Alta California Mission dedicated to San Diego. Vowing to stay with the local people, Padre Junipero Serra and another friar began a novena in preparation for St. Joseph’s day, March 19th, the scheduled day of departure. On that day, the relief ship arrived.
For Saint Junipero, the event was so significant that he ordered a High Mass to be celebrated on the 19th of every month in honor of Saint Joseph.
Join us on the 19th of every month as we continue the tradition started by Saint Junipero to honor Saint Joseph in our Chapel of Healing.
